Damn looks good. People saying they broke some rules so they deserved their fates is like, it shows how weirdly people treat horror movie characters. Most people even think if you have sex in a horror film, you die, as if those horror movie protagonists deserved to be punished, and so harshly at that. Granted, I think for some people, they probably have their horror movie, meta glasses on and it's less they deserved it and more they just made themselves murder candidates in a horror film, as that's definitely how I watch movies. You get characters where you go they're aren't doing anything that bad, or they're only kind of rude, but it means they're on the chopping block now by nature of the genre and its tropes and I imagine I'm not the only one, but that didn't color the ending as positive for me. I'm SUPER surprised people saw that ending as anything but extremely unsettling in how this girl was taken advanage of and brainwashed into accepting the murders of these people who were like, mostly just flawed humans like everyone else. (some more than others. She went from one abusive boyfriend (who was mostly emotionally abusive) to an even more abusive relationship (that's egregiously mentally and physically abusive.

As a brown person I was immediately uncomfortable with how white the cult was, demographically and also aesthetically. I think a lot of people put themselves in the situation of being in Danny's shoes and integrating into the cult, but I think that for people of color that is more difficult. I've noticed that in very white spaces I find myself looking for little signs, either of hostility or welcoming, and the cult never struck me as welcoming during my viewing time (because of the literal murder of outsiders, of course, this being a horror movie, etc.) but also, for example, when they talk about bringing outsiders in to avoid inbreeding my immediate thought was that there seems to be no mixed-race people. During the movie I thought that Danny in particular blended in with the cult very well too, light eyes and blond hair, figured that was also a reason she was chosen. Also casting out the black one I mean.

My bf and I were watching it and decided that we should watch it a second time so we can see and digest all the “symbolism”. But it was just so boring that we never got around to it again. Also, the side characters dont really matter since they dont add much to the movie except act as fodder. If it had been just Danny and Christian trying to “work out” their relationship while in that trip it wouldve been fun or at least her confronting him about it after years of a shitty relationship with not only him but her own sister.
